Reconstructive surgery for correction of
deformities in hands, feet and eyes of leprosy affected persons are being
done since 1969. Nerve surgeries are also being carried out
to prevent deformities. Since 1969, 6,397 patients have had reconstructive
surgery, 4,344 for hand, 1,873 for foot and 180
for face. 791 patients underwent nerve surgery.
The other major problem faced by leprosy affected
individuals, namely trophic ulcers and hand infections are also being treated.
Short surgical procedures are carried out for these patients to heal the
ulcers and to prevent their recurrence. 37,472 such procedures have
been done so far.
